This week, I had the profound privilege of conversing with Josh Farr, a visionary leadership consultant dedicated to transforming university campuses and enhancing student engagement through the power of leadership. Josh shared valuable insights into his approach to leadership training and its impact on students’ lives and career prospects.

📍Q: In your role as a leadership consultant, what are some of the most common challenges you encounter when training individuals or teams? How do you address these challenges to ensure effective learning and application?

Josh: “The key to effective leadership training lies in aligning the training objectives with desired outcomes. Our approach is a three-step process: designing a tailored training solution, facilitating actionable steps, and achieving results. The greatest challenge often is clarifying the desired outcome—why the training is needed and what problem it aims to solve. We focus on transforming behaviors to provide real solutions, ensuring that participants not only believe in the results but are equipped to achieve them.”

📍Q: How do you view the role of leadership skills in enhancing a student’s career prospects? Are there specific leadership qualities that employers highly value?

Josh: “Leadership profoundly impacts career prospects by empowering students to take charge of their lives and careers proactively. Key qualities like setting goals, confronting challenges, and expanding one’s network are invaluable. Employers highly value this proactive approach, as it demonstrates readiness to lead and effect change.”

📍Q: What advice would you give to someone aspiring to take on a leadership role for the first time? Are there common pitfalls they should look to avoid?

Josh: “Approach leadership as a learning journey—be a student of leadership. Utilize resources like podcasts, LinkedIn, and books recommended by experienced leaders. Engage actively with this content and return to your mentors with questions and reflections. The key is to bridge the gap between knowledge and action, ensuring you’re not just informed but also capable of implementing what you learn.”

📍One message for the world:

Josh: “Be useful. Focus on helping others. Engage with people, understand their needs, and assist them in overcoming obstacles. By guiding others to embrace empowering ideas and new challenges, you’re not just changing lives; you’re enhancing your own leadership skills.”

✨ Key Takeaways:

Josh’s methodology emphasizes the transformative power of leadership in enhancing student engagement and success. His strategies are designed to empower students to become leaders who are not only effective in their roles but also capable of driving positive change in their communities and beyond.
