This week, I had the opportunity to speak with Adyant Modi and Sukhmani Sahota, Co-presidents of Beta Alpha Psi – Xi Kappa, Deakin University, Deakin University‘s chapter. Adyant is pursuing a double bachelor’s degree in Commerce and Business Analytics, and Sukhmani is studying bachelor of Commerce (Finance and Accounting). Both have taken impressive strides in their academic pursuits and in their extracurricular involvements.
Here’s what we discussed:
📍Q: How do you manage the balance between academic responsibilities, leadership roles, and personal life?
Adyant: “I’ve learned that time management is a crucial skill. It’s about scheduling your priorities and not just prioritizing your schedule. For me, no opportunity should be left unexplored as getting out of your comfort zone is where growth happens.”
Sukhmani: “Balancing everything was initially overwhelming, but setting priorities has been crucial. I use a physical timetable to manage my time effectively across academics, leadership, and personal life. This structured approach helps me maintain balance and prevent burnout.”
📍Q: What have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your leadership roles, and how have you overcome them?
Adyant: “In our roles, we must often make tough decisions that might not please everyone but are necessary for the society’s growth. Balancing different leadership styles for different situations is challenging but essential.”
Sukhmani: “Leading a diverse team of 14, each with unique styles and perspectives, requires adapting my approach to ensure everyone feels valued. Balancing ‘good cop, bad cop’ dynamic with my co-president helps us manage effectively and push decisions forward.”
📍 Q Aside from your academic and leadership roles, what personal achievements are you most proud of during your university years?
Adyant: “I`m most proud of the extensive network I`ve built globally. Starting early in my university years has now given me opportunities to work internationally.”
Sukhmani: “My adventures, from competing internationally in lawn tennis to exploring new places like New Zealand and Bali, have enriched my personal and academic life, providing cultural insights and fostering personal growth.”
📍Q: One message to the world?
Adyant: “You are somebody NOW, and you will be somebody then. Read that again. Be grateful for each moment and opportunity.”
Sukhmani: “Embrace the 1% improvement philosophy. Small, consistent changes drive substantial growth.”
