This week, I had the enlightening opportunity to chat with Liam Brown, an Early Careers Talent Advisor at Grant Thornton Australia, who has a keen eye on the evolving landscape of accounting and advisory industry. He shared valuable insights on navigating early career challenges, industry trends, and offered sage advice for students.

📍Q: Given your role as an Early Careers Talent Advisor, what are challenges you see new graduates face as they enter the accounting and advisory industry, and how do you guide them through these challenges?

Liam: “The impact of Covid on students’ high school years—a crucial time for social and academic development—has been significant. Many students lack the soft and interpersonal skills needed in our industry due to this disruption. We of course, focus on these areas in our Learning & Development programs, emphasising the importance of authentic conversations and the power of being curious. It’s also a competitive market out there; more employers are competing for graduates, making engagement and retention strategies more important than ever.”

📍Q: How has the accounting and advisory industry changed since you started, and what trends do you anticipate will shape the future?

Liam: “When I began my career, generative AI and its daily applications were not something on my mind. Now, it’s pivotal for initiating ideas and streamlining processes. Post-Covid, there’s a notable shift back to in-person interactions; clients appreciate onsite meetings, and more organisations are encouraging staff to return to the office. However, the digital transformation has also empowered entrepreneurs to start businesses from home, broadening prospective clients. Interestingly, despite the digital push, there’s a strong desire among students for personal interaction—they want to experience the office environment firsthand.”

📍Q: What advice would you give to current students pursuing a degree in business, accounting, or management/marketing?

Liam: “It’s essential to understand the diverse career paths available within your field. I started in a traditional accounting role and have transitioned into graduate recruitment, which shows the versatility of the skills you acquire. Maximise your opportunities through internships and vacation programs to truly test the waters. Build your network; attending career fairs and panel discussions can lead to transformative conversations that might just redefine your career trajectory.”

📍Q: One message for the world?

Liam: “Be the smile that makes the smile. Focus on your hopes, not your fears.”

✨Key Takeaways:

Liam’s approach blends practical career advice with a deep understanding of the personal touch needed in today’s professional environment. His insights highlight the importance of adapting to technological advancements while maintaining genuine connections, both in and out of the workplace.
