I had the pleasure of sitting down with Purvang Dave, a dynamic individual who has seamlessly integrated technology and business acumen throughout his career. With experiences ranging from blockchain innovation to leading global volunteer programs, Purvang shared his insights on the future of technology, leadership, and the balance between technical and business expertise.
📍Q: Based on your journey through different sectors within technology, how do you see the industry evolving in the next few years, especially considering emerging technologies like AI and blockchain?
Purvang: Having worked directly with blockchain, especially in the healthcare sector, I’ve seen its potential firsthand. AI, though often viewed with apprehension as more of a weapon than a tool, holds tremendous promise if leveraged correctly. The industry is eager to tap into its full potential, but it’s crucial not to let technology curb human creativity. For instance, using AI for tasks as simple as writing an email might limit creative input. I advocate for using AI as a finisher rather than a primary tool, to enhance rather than replace the human element.
📍Q: Leading the Global Volunteering program at AIESEC in RMIT University, what strategies do you employ to mentor and motivate your team? How do you measure the success of your initiatives?
Purvang: In both India and Australia, and now globally, my strategy hinges on making the team believe in the impact of their work, which I refer to as ‘exchange’ rather than mere volunteering. Regular, informal catch-ups help maintain engagement and provide a platform for consistent, constructive feedback. I use a threefold method to measure success: evaluating what went well, identifying areas for improvement, and planning forward steps.
📍Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to follow a similar path as yours, balancing technical expertise with business acumen?
Purvang: “Start with figuring out your ‘why.’ Your ‘what,’ ‘how,’ and ‘when’ will never be as clear, but understanding your core motivation can guide your career decisions. The industry favors individuals who are flexible and adaptable—qualities that are paramount today. Stay abreast of industry trends, commit to lifelong learning, and don’t hesitate to reach out to others for their insights and experiences.”
📍Q: One message for the world?
Purvang: “Give yourself the grace to fail. If you fear failure, you’re holding back your potential. Remember, failure and success go hand in hand. Be prepared to embrace failure as a step towards success.”
