Espresso Exchanges Episode 26: Zachery Lunnon

In this episode, I caught up with Zachery Lunnon, a driven Bachelor of Commerce student from Deakin University, who is deeply immersed in the world of finance and leadership. He shared his aspirations within the banking and finance sector, his proactive approach to professional development through the CFA program, and his passion for leadership and personal growth.

📍Q: With your interest in banking and finance, what specific areas within this sector are you most passionate about, and where do you see yourself post-graduation?

Zach: “I’m particularly passionate about working in senior management within a bank. The banking sector appeals to me because it interacts with a diverse range of clients—from small businesses and major corporations to first-time home buyers. There’s always something new to learn and opportunities to explore. Additionally, I’m drawn to the dynamic environment of consulting and would love to work for an accounting firm like Deloitte, where I can apply my learning in a practical setting.”

📍Q: How do you believe that pursuing the CFA program will impact your career prospects in finance? What motivated you to start this certification early in your career?

Zach: “Starting the CFA early in my career was motivated by the realization that it’s often a prerequisite for senior roles in finance, particularly on executive boards. I noticed this requirement frequently in job listings on platforms like SEEK and Indeed. Pursuing the CFA now, while I’m still in my first year of university, seems perfect as it aligns well with my current coursework, allowing me to optimize my time and integrate my learning with my professional goals.”

📍Q: How do you plan to further develop your skills in leadership and finance in the coming years? Are there specific courses, seminars, or books that you find invaluable?

Zach: “I’m committed to continuous learning and self-improvement. Reading plays a big part in this—I spend about an hour each day reading books that enhance my understanding of finance and leadership. One of my favorites is ‘Who Gets Promoted, Who Doesn’t, and Why’ because it provides deep insights into corporate advancement. Additionally, I plan to get involved with the Deakin Commerce Society to not only give back but also to build my leadership experience and expand my network.”

📍Q: One message for the world?

Zach: “The most important thing in life is health. Without good health, everything else becomes unsustainable. Good health enhances every aspect of life, including your relationships and financial well-being.”

✨Key Takeaways:

Zach’s journey is an example of how early career decisions can set the foundation for future success in competitive fields like finance. His proactive approach to education, certification, and leadership not only prepares him for future challenges but also positions him as a promising leader in his field.
