I had the opportunity to sit down with Clark Rodger, the General Manager of Human Resources at AKD. We delved into his career progression, the evolving challenges in human resources, and the role of community involvement in professional development.
📍 Q: Can you share how your role evolved from HR Coordinator to General Manager of Human Resources at AKD?
Clark: “My journey at AKD began as a graduate during a period of cultural change, followed by significant business growth. I invested time and energy into the roles I had, and this investment was rewarded with opportunities to learn or take on new responsibilities. Over a decade, I had numerous changes to my responsibilities and role. A pivotal moment in my progression was when I was given the opportunity to manage the acquisition of our NSW business, which solidified my role as a leader within the company.”
📍 Q: What are the biggest challenges you face in managing human resources for such a large workforce today?
Clark: “I’m not sure about biggest, but Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) remains an ongoing challenge for our industry, and business. It’s about fostering a culture that reflects societal changes, expectations and evolving norms. Particularly in our industry, addressing gender diversity and changing ingrained perceptions is critical. We’re committed to initiating these changes from the grassroots level within our organisation and believe in the benefits greater diversity provides to a business.”
📍 Q: How do you view the role of volunteering and participation in community service in personal and professional development for young professionals?
Clark: Having grown up in regional communities, I feel that involvement in local activities and groups offers great networking opportunities, and also provides an avenue of belonging and contribution outside of work, which is important. Volunteering or even just participation in community reflects and builds character, and provides a foundation in community that supports career growth.
📍 Q: One message for the world?
Clark: Always remember what’s truly important to you. Avoid simply following the herd; each of us are unique and that uniqueness should be respected in yourself and others.
