I had the enriching opportunity to sit down with Simeon Oborn, the Supply Chain Manager at AKD. Simeon shared his unique journey from aviation to supply chain management, offering insights into the shifts and the valuable lessons learned along the way.

📍 Q: Can you describe your journey from starting as a Production Operator to becoming a Supply Chain Manager at AKD Softwoods? What were some of the key steps or decisions involved?

Simeon: “I began my career as a flying instructor in New Zealand, which was quite fulfilling. After moving to Australia and experiencing the impacts of COVID, I joined AKD Softwoods in Colac. I proactively sought to expand my role within the company, taking on new challenges and progressively moving up every 6-12 months. Showing initiative and being visible in your work is crucial, as it opens up more learning opportunities and pathways for advancement.”

📍 Q: Transitioning from aviation to supply chain management is quite a shift. What inspired this change, and how have your previous experiences influenced your current role?

Simeon: “I was inspired by the new opportunities that arose. There was a lot of crossover in skills, particularly those related to continuous improvement and self-enhancement, which are essential in any field. Transitioning from service to manufacturing was a challenge, but the core principles of self-improvement and adaptability helped me make a significant impact.”

📍 Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to transition their career into supply chain management or a similar field?

Simeon: “Emphasize gaining hands-on experience over academic study. It’s crucial to immerse yourself within the company and learn as much as you can on the job. Practical experience is invaluable, as it teaches you to navigate daily challenges and make informed decisions.”

📍 Q: One message for the world

Simeon: “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Always be ready to seize the opportunities that come your way.”
