Espresso Exchanges Episode 82: Matthew Fletcher

I caught up with Matthew Fletcher, Associate Director at KPMG Australia Geelong, who has worked across business, government, and community to help shape regional growth and build stronger ecosystems. We spoke about people, trust, and why regional cities have a unique edge.

📍 Q: You’ve worked across business, government, and community. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned about how these systems actually work together in practice?

Matthew: “At the end of the day, they’re all people.

We often think these systems are completely different, and in some ways they are, but the common denominator is always people. It comes down to understanding their problems, their passions, and their potential. Instead of telling people what to do, it’s about asking questions and really listening. We have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Be kind, listen well, and remember we’re all human.”

📍 Q: You were the inaugural employee for KPMG Australia’s Geelong office. What did it take to build something from the ground up in a regional market?

Matthew: “Lots of coffees.

It really comes down to relationships. We’re a trust based organisation, and your ability to engage with people depends on how much they trust you. If there’s no trust, there’s no business. That trust comes from integrity and character, both individually and as an organisation.

Building something in a regional market takes time. Transactions can happen quickly, but trust is built slowly, by consistently showing up and investing in people.”

📍 Q: Do you think regional cities like Geelong have an advantage over major cities when it comes to innovation and community building?

Matthew: “Absolutely. In larger cities, you often stay within your own industry or network. In regional areas, you’re exposed to a mix of different sectors and perspectives.

That diversity pushes you to think differently and learn things you might not have otherwise. It creates an environment where innovation can thrive because you’re constantly seeing new ideas and challenges.”

📍 Q: One message for the world

Matthew: “Be kind and be curious.”#LFG.”

✨ Key Takeaway:

Matthew’s perspective is a reminder that no matter the system or sector, everything comes back to people. When you lead with curiosity, build trust over time, and stay open to different perspectives, you create the conditions for real impact and innovation.
