I caught up with Joe Escobedo, AI educator, marketing strategist, and lecturer who now teaches Fortune 500 leaders how to communicate and sell using AI. We spoke about confidence, human connection in an AI-driven world, and the skills future leaders need most.
đź“Ť Q: You went from struggling with a speech impediment and stage fright to teaching Fortune 500 leaders how to communicate and sell using AI. What changed internally for you during that journey?
Joe: “I realised my career had become stagnant because of my communication skills, both externally and internally. That’s when I joined Toastmasters to improve my speaking and build confidence. It completely changed my life. Now, almost every role I have revolves around communication. What used to be my biggest weakness eventually became one of my biggest strengths.”
📍 Q: There’s a lot of fear around AI replacing human connection. Why do you believe the “human touch” matters even more in an AI-driven world?
Joe: “At the end of the day, we are social creatures. Human connection has been deeply ingrained in us for thousands of years. AI can’t truly replicate shared stories, emotions, and lived experiences.
What concerns me more is people outsourcing their thinking completely to AI. People at every level are using it to think for them, and if we continue down that path, our ability to think critically could weaken over time. But if you use AI as a sparring partner instead of a replacement, it becomes incredibly powerful.”
đź“Ť Q: You teach across multiple universities and leadership groups. What skill do you think young professionals need most today that traditional education still struggles to teach?
Joe: “I think there are really two muscles people need to develop. One is the technical and AI side, and the other is the human side, especially critical thinking.
That second muscle is what sharpens you as a future leader. Technology matters, but your ability to think independently and communicate clearly is what will separate people in the long run.”
